History of Fort Lauderdale
Fort Lauderdale is a popular tourist spot in southern Florida near the Atlantic Ocean coastline. The city is named after forts that were constructed by the United States during the Second Seminole War and the commander who oversaw the construction, Major William Lauderdale.
Ft Lauderdale grew in an area that was originally the home of the Tequesta Indians. By the 1830’s, the settlement housed 70 settlers. However, the city was not incorporated until 1911, and was made the Broward County Seat in 1915. During World War II, Fort Lauderdale became a large military base. The city’s residents include 75 percent English speakers, nine percent Spanish speakers and 7.5 percent Haitian Creole speakers. Fort Lauderdale also has a higher than average percentage of LGBT residents, with a higher percentage of gay men than lesbians.
